The ADHD Assessment Process

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) assessments provide valuable insights into an individual’s cognitive and behavioural patterns. At The UK Practice, we offer thorough and professional adult ADHD assessments to help clients understand their unique challenges and strengths. These assessments are designed to identify symptoms, rule out other potential causes, and provide a clear diagnosis where appropriate.

Our assessments are conducted in accordance with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines for the diagnosis and management of ADHD in adults, ensuring a thorough and standardised approach.

The following timeline outlines the typical steps involved in our assessment process:

1

Duration: 15 minutes

This initial, no-obligation call is for brief questions, to determine if our services
are a good fit, and to clarify the general assessment process.

2

Duration: 60 minutes

To conduct a detailed intake interview, this session focuses on:

- Understanding the presenting difficulties (current symptoms, impact on daily life).
- Reviewing past difficulties and developmental history.
- Determining if the symptoms align with criteria that warrant a full, comprehensive ADHD Assessment.

3

Duration: 3 - 4 Sessions, including a collateral interview.

This is the core data-gathering stage, involving a comprehensive evaluation
that goes beyond just ADHD:

- Developmental History: Detailed review of childhood milestones and functioning.
- Mental Health Assessment: Screening for co-occurring conditions (e.g., anxiety,
depression, learning difficulties) that may co-exist with ADHD.
- Diagnostic Assessment: Using standardised, evidence-based tools, structured interviews, and gathering collateral information from others (e.g., parents, partners, or teachers) to assess symptoms across multiple settings and historical periods.

4

Duration: 50 minutes

The purpose of this session is to share the findings of the assessment phase:

- Diagnosis: Clear communication of whether the diagnostic criteria for ADHD (or any other condition) were met.
- Psychoeducation: Providing you with an understanding of ADHD, its neurobiological basis, and how it impacts your life.
- Discussion of Recommendations: Developing a collaborative treatment plan, which may include a referral for medication review, coaching, specific therapy (like CBT), or accommodations.

5

Should you require formal documentation (e.g., for school/university
accommodations, workplace requests, or medical professionals):

- A comprehensive written report is created, summarising the assessment process, findings, diagnosis, and detailed recommendations.
- Reports can be used to access care pathways and inform appropriate interventions with other professionals (e.g OT, Psychiatry, Physiotherapy, ADHD coaching)

6

This is an optional session which can be helpful to discuss and facilitate any recommendations, and to discuss any post diagnostic thoughts you may have.

Our clinicians are experienced in helping clients navigate the complexities of ADHD, providing compassionate support throughout the process. Whether you suspect ADHD in yourself or a loved one, our comprehensive assessments can provide clarity and pave the way for effective interventions.
